On a Saturday afternoon, I travelled to Turkey and the Mediterranean without getting on an airplane. Experience the cultures abroad in the vast food experiences we have in Southern California. I visited the Doner G restaurant in Irvine, CA for lunch. I was excited to meet up with friends there and try a new restaurant. This restaurant is located in The Crossroad shopping center and what an experience it is. Read on to learn more about this amazing eatery.

What does Doner G mean? It is the method in which marinated meat is slowly cooked. The best way to describe it is a large vertical rotisserie or a rotisserie turned on it's head. Specific meats are slowly cooked as it rotates. The meat is covered in herbs and spices that have been prepared with extreme care. This restaurant is HALAL approved and therefore the meat has been carefully prepared. This preparation translates into juicy and delicious meat for dishes like the Doner Kebab Pita Sandwich.

During my visit, I tried several dishes. A favorite among the table was the Shepherd's Salad. This salad had finely chopped tomatoes and cucumbers, sprinkled with fresh parsley with a fresh salad dressing made of vinegar, extra virgin olive oil and freshly squeezed lemon juice. All of the ingredients were fresh and tasted amazing together. I could not get enough of the salad (pictured below on the bottom left.) My friends ordered the Tabouli Salad (shown on the top left), Fettush Salad (shown on the top right) and Dolma, which are grape leaves stuffed with rice, parsley, onions and herbs. Also served were Falafel, fried veggie patties made of blended chick peas. I sampled a little bit of everything and made my own customized plate (shown below on the bottom right). Doner G is perfect for family style sharing.

I was lucky that my blogger friends and I were able to share our meals and have a delicious experience in Turkish food. I understand family style eating is not for everyone, so I have a great deal for those who want to try the Doner G experience. The restaurant offers a special of a Gyro (slow cooked meat wrapped in pita bread) with french fries and a drink for only $6.99. This is a great deal for lunch or dinner.
Spending an afternoon with friends and great food was a great gift for me. Looking back at the day, it felt like a 10 minute experience talking and eating however in real time, we spent 2 hours sharing a meal. Lunch was a day of fun conversations about the silly things that happen in our homes and enjoying truly amazing food. My friends and I spent most of the time talking about the delicious food that was served to us that we forgot to catch up. My friends and I will always remember Turkey and the Mediterranean with great fondness because of the Doner G.
