Field Trip to CA Science Center

Over the Thanksgiving Holiday we drove to Los Angeles and visited the CA Science Center. It is an amazing thing to see the Endeavour Space Shuttle up close. The years of hard work by the NASA and others was very visible on the walls and throughout the exhibit. There is a short movie of the Endeavour at the end of the exhibit that I recommend you watch. But this is an exhibit you have to visit at least once. It will take your breathe away. I don't want to give too much away, so that you can see it through your own eyes. Let me know if you.

Happy Field Tripping!

Thank you!

I wanted to say "Thank You" for all your support all year long. I am amazed how great you have been and how often you visit my blog. As you have seen my life has changed a little. I am now working a part-time job to help my family. I still pick-up the kids from school and have family dinners. I am grateful for everything this year, because all the changes have made me a better mom and better person. I do have to admit, it has been hard these past few months with all the new routines and schedules. But it has been great to feel the support of you and my family. I could not have made it this year without all of your continued support. May you always find peace and love where ever you go. Happy Holidays.  Alma

Is There Really a Santa Claus?

Kids Will Truly Believe When Santa Writes Back

WASHINGTON — The U.S. Postal Service is helping keep the enchantment of Santa Claus alive with its “Letters From Santa” program. “Letters From Santa” allows a parent, grandparent or any person in a child’s life to mail a letter to their child “From Santa,” postmarked from the North Pole.

2. Insert the letter into an envelope addressed to your child with the return address:

SANTA, NORTH POLE.

3. Ensure a First-Class Mail stamp is affixed to the envelope.
4. Place the envelope into a larger envelope, with appropriate postage, and address the larger envelope to:

In “Operation Santa,” the Postal Service facilitates the matching of customers with letters written to Santa from needy children. Participants in “Operation Santa” help fulfill a child’s dream with a gift and a response letter from Santa. (Customers are not provided the child’s address in the “Operation Santa” program.) The “Letters From Santa” program helps parents fulfill the dreams of their own children.
The Postal Service receives no tax dollars for operating expenses and relies on the sale of postage, products and services to fund its operations.

The Scary Truth - Dealing with Diabetes

Every year, more than 15,000 children are diagnosed with Type 1 Diabetes.  Type 1 Diabetes is defined by Wikipedia as:

Diabetes mellitus type 1 (type 1 diabetes, T1DM, formerly insulin dependent or juvenile diabetes) is a form of diabetes mellitus that results from autoimmune destruction of insulin-producing beta cells of the pancreas. The subsequent lack of insulin leads to increased blood and urine glucose. The classical symptoms are polyuria (frequent urination), polydipsia (increased thirst), polyphagia (increased hunger), and weight loss.  Eventually, type 1 diabetes is fatal unless treated with insulin. Injection is the most common method of administering insulin although other methods are insulin pumps and inhaled insulin. Other alternatives are Pancreatic transplants that have been used and also pancreatic islet cell transplantation. Transplantation is experimental yet growing.
Most people who develop type 1 are otherwise healthy. Although the cause of type 1 diabetes is still not fully understood, it is believed to be of immunological origin. Type 1 can be distinguished from type 2 diabetes via a C-peptide assay, which measures endogenous insulin production.
Type 1 treatment must be continued indefinitely in all cases. Treatment should not significantly impair normal activities but can be done adequately if sufficient patient training, awareness, appropriate care, discipline in testing and dosing of insulin is taken. However, treatment remains quite burdensome for many people. Complications may be associated with both low blood sugar and high blood sugar, both largely due to the nonphysiological manner in which insulin is replaced. Low blood sugar may lead to seizures or episodes of unconsciousness, and requires emergency treatment. High blood sugar may lead to increased fatigue and can also result in long-term damage to organs.

File:Main symptoms of diabetes.png
Signs and symptoms
The classical symptoms of type 1 diabetes include: polyuria (frequent urination), polydipsia (increased thirst), Xerostomia (dry mouth), polyphagia (increased hunger), fatigue, and weight loss. Before a person knows they have diabetes, blood sugar levels are in a very high range for long periods of time which could cause diabetic ketoacidosis. These symptoms could be xeroderma (dry skin), rapid, deep breathing, drowsiness, gastralgia (abdominal pain), and copremsis (vomiting).

Children with this disease often have a difficult time going to school and managing their disease as many schools are running out of funds for on site nurses.  This makes it stressful and challenging for parents to ensure appropriate care for their child while in the hands of our school system.  November is the National Diabetes Awareness Month and with the hard work of the American Diabetes Association, Government Affairs and Legal Advocacy and parents, these groups have created an online destination dedicated entirely to Type 1 Diabetes on the Disney Family website at www.family.com/type1.

Field Trip Mom has been provided with books from Disney and Lilly Diabetes to help families understand and better manage their diagnosis of a family member or friend with Type 1.  The books, "Coco Goes Back to School" and Dishing It Up Disney Style (A Cookbook for Families with Type 1 Diabetes) help support all those who are looking for additional information.  Even if you are not directly effected, awareness is the key.

Coco Goes Back to School is an excellent children's book with the characters Mickey Mouse, Goofy, Donald, Daisy and Minnie joining in the story.  Coco has been diagnosed with Type 1 Diabetes and wants to share her new medical bracelet with her class but is nervous to do so.  With the help of the Disney gang, Coco  gets help with her science fair project  to create awareness for all.  This book is excellent for helping explain to children the difficulties associated with Diabetes and having to manage the disease while in school.

Dishing It Up Disney Style is Delicious cookbook for families to serve healthy meals for their families while couping with a family member who has  the disease.  Recipes are separated by breakfast, lunch and dinner and have incredible names such as Coco's Banana Smoothie, Peter Pan's Pumpkin Waffles, and Alice's Chicken Salad Tea Sandwiches.  Listed below is an example of one of these delicious recipes.

Genie's Fuancamole Potato Salad
3 lbs red potatoes
2 tbsp  + 1 tsp salt
1 ripe avocado, peeled
2 tsp grated lime zest
Juice of 2 limes
2 garlic cloves, crushed
1/2 cup chopped cilantro
2 tbsp light mayonnaise
2 celery stalks, sliced
In a large pot, cover the potatoes with cold water.  Add the 2 tbsp of salt and bring to a boil over high heat.  Reduce the heat to medium and simmer until the potatoes are tender, about 20 minutes.  Drain them in a colander and allow to cool.  Puree the avocado, lime zest and juice, garlic, cilantro, mayonnaise, and remaining salt in a food processor until smooth.  If the dressing seems too thick, add a tbsp or so of hot water.  Cut the potatoes into bite-sized chunks and place them in a large bowl with the celery.  Scrape in the dressing with a rubber spatula and gently stir it all together.  Serve immediately or cover and chill.

But a menagerie of misfit pirates are determined to shiver their timbers and capsize their journey home. Join a boat-load of lovable new characters (voiced by Jennifer Lopez, Aziz Ansari and Peter Dinklage) for original songs, spectacular animation and heartwarming family fun.

Field Trip Mom was given the incredible opportunity to prescreen Ice Age Continental Drift prior to its Blu Ray DVD release.  As an incredible continuation to the adventures, this movie is chalk full of laughs and adventure, continuing with the saga.  Nothing is left out for this franchises' 4th movie and is just as exciting and entertaining as the first three movies.  Ray Romano, as Manny, is funny as always with wise cracks that keep you laughing.  Antics by Sid, played by John Leguizamo, make for slap stick humor aimed at kids and adults alike.  Dennis Leary, as Diego, is wild and witty.

Ice Age Continental Drift is rated PG and has a run time of 88 minutes.  Plenty of extras on this DVD including:

ICE AGE: CONTINENTAL DRIFT Blu-ray™ 3D Special Features

Ÿ  The Scratist

The MPAA comments on the movie are listed below.  Every parent must use their own beliefs and discretion when monitoring their children's viewing habits and comments are simply suggestions for those purposes.

Sex/Nudity:
All the characters are animals covered with fur, however certain character have pronounced buttocks or anthropomorphic bosoms.  There are some romances between characters: Peaches and Ethan, Diego and Shira.  Two scenes involve fish who turn into figures that attract the others: for example Diego sees Shira, Sid sees a girl sloth, Manny sees Ellie and Peaches and Scrat sees Scratte.  A male seal is wondering where his 'booty' is and while searching for it, his butt gets close to the camera.  Peaches calls Ethan 'hot'.

Violence/Gore:
In many scenes characters are threatened with knives made of fish bones.  Nobody gets hurt.  Mild slapstick violence in general.

Profanity:
In one scene, Sid says "Holy Crab!" which sound a lot like "Holy Crap!".  When Sid meets his old family (in which they abandon him again a few minutes later), Granny says "I'll bury you all and piss on your grave"

Alcohol/ Drugs/Smoking:
Manny has a moan about Peach going to the falls, saying that 'First its the falls, then shes piercing her trunk then the next thing you know shes addicted to berries!" which could be drugs.

Frightening/Intense Scenes:
The first 20 minutes of the film can be quite a bit intense.  Characters are in constant danger from falling rocks and ice blocks, earthquakes, breaking ice, etc.  The film may upset as Peaches is frequently worrying about how she might never see her father again, and thinking how the last thing she said to him was that she never wanted him as his father.  The surreal grinning fish may frighten young children.  Kids may get scared as this film is shot in 3D.  The Siren scene may be scary for young children. Appropriate for 7 Years +.

As parents of 6 and 8 year old boys, we believe the movie was rated correctly.  At no time did we feel the scenes were too intense or suggestive for our children.  Adult connotations are occasionally evident in the movie however no scenes spoke of or showed topics that have not been explained or discussed in our home or at school.  Personal opinions may vary dependent on family beliefs and values.  Field Trip Mom respects the decisions of all.

As a special offer, Field Trip Mom is raffling off a copy of Ice Age Continental Drift.  You need to hurry, the deadline is rapidly approaching on this raffle and is limited to one copy.  Click on the link below and sign up using your Facebook log in or email address.

Mrs. Knotts Thanksgiving Dinner To Go

Cooking Thanksgiving Dinner has never gotten easier with the help of Mrs. Knott's Chicken House at Knott's Berry Farm in Buena Park.  Field Trip Mom was one of the exclusive invitees to sample Mrs. Knott's Thanksgiving Feast and we are beyond excited to share our experience with our followers.

We arrived promptly at 6 PM, where Alma was easily dropped off in front of Mrs. Knott's Chicken Dinner Restaurant.  The boys and I quickly parked the car in the 3 hour free parking lot near Ghost Rider and TGI Friday's restaurant.  Parking was simple, take a ticket from the automated booth and we found ample parking very close to our destination.  There are many shopping opportunities in the main street of Knott's Berry Farm and with this 3 hour free parking, there is plenty of time to pick up all of your favorite treats and gifts for this holiday season.  The boys and I quickly found Alma at the chicken restaurant "take out" store where she was standing in line.  A very quick and simple process as the employees were prompt and friendly assisting all of the bloggers for this event as well as the Friday night dinner orders.  Chicken meals to the left, biscuits and jam to the right, what's not to love.

The staff brought out our meal which I was expecting only a couple of trays, enough for a family of four and on the counter he laid the biggest, heaviest box of Thanksgiving Feast down for us.  That wasn't the end, another staff member came up behind with a whole pumpkin pie and handed it to Alma.  ABSOLUTELY AMAZING!!!  As I stand there in awe, I could only see a golden glow surrounding the box as the smell of turkey started to fill the air!  My initial reaction was, "Alma, get some paper plates from them because this isn't going to last during the drive home!"  I was excited but controlled my emotions as we started to walk out.  Alma wanted to buy some jams from the store next door, so we walked past the delicious bakery without having to walk outside into the general store next door.  We bought our jams and headed back to the car.  In no time, we were in the car, through the parking booth and on the freeway heading home.

We arrived home, set the box down and like a pack of wolves, the boys and Alma couldn't resist the smell from inside the box.  Knott's Executive Chef, Bobby Obezo, placed a very nice Happy Holiday letter inside the box with full heating instructions to ensure cooking success.  Now, I know what you are thinking, oh great, must reheat, now its dry....FAR FROM THE TRUTH!  Knott's culinary experts have created the perfect method for cooking and reheating to  ensure the meal is as fresh as cooking it yourself.

The meal is cook to 90% completion at Knott's kitchen, then boxed and available for you to pick up.  You simply follow the easy instructions on the back of the letter and about an hour later you are ready to eat.  The turkey is covered in two foil trays then wrapped in foil to secure the trays and prevent the juices from leaking during transportation.  All of the side dishes are securely sealed in their own microwavable containers to prevent spills and ensure ease of reheating.  The cranberries, pickles, butter, jellies and rolls are all packaged in containers then separated in paper bags to ensure freshness.

The pumpkin pie was contained in its disposable pie tin then packaged in this plastic cover to ensure safe travels.  We took the turkey out of the box, preheated the over to 350 degrees F and set the 12 lb bird in the oven.  Watching it at 30 and 45 minute intervals we checked the temperature of the bird to ensure it was at 165 degrees and to prevent drying out the meat.  The instructions carefully advised us that ovens vary in temperature and to check the turkey.  About 50 minutes later, we were at our exact temperature and took the turkey out of the oven to sit for 5 minutes to rest from all of excitement of cooking.  During this time, we started warming all of the delicious side dishes and getting drinks on the table.  The joy of bringing the family together to cook, set the table and enjoy the smells of Thanksgiving brought happy thoughts and memorable moments for our entire family.  I unwrapped the turkey as the family set the table and carved up enough meat to serve us all.

We sat down at the table and said our blessing, thanking God and Knott's Berry Farm for this glorious meal.  We prayed for all of our soldiers serving our country and thanked our family and friends for all that they do for us on a daily basis.  Lastly, we prayed for those persons that are less fortunate asking that their prayers are answered for a hot meal, warm clothing and a roof over their heads during this holiday season and for time to come!  Bless all of our followers and please consider inviting a person or family who is less fortunate to celebrate with you during this holiday season.

I cannot tell you how good this meal is.  All of your favorites are in one box, ready to heat and serve.  The turkey is moist and seasoned to perfection, the rolls are soft and delicious, the potatoes are creamy and smooth, candied yams, cranberries, butter pickles, and who can forget the savory country apple stuffing.  Mouth drooling yet???  Keep reading, the how to order facts are coming!  Look at this delicious turkey.  This meal is a win for the entire family.  Save money at the grocery store as this meal is priced right.  No cutting, chopping, slicing and being stuck in the kitchen.  Go enjoy that family traditional flag football game in the park.

Knotts Berry Farm is making pick up easier than ever.  Drive to the easy pick up spot, no need to get out of your vehicle as Knotts is setting up a drive thru style pick up, simply show your paperwork, pop your trunk and head home to enjoy the rest of the holiday with your family.  Even if you decide to add some snacks before the meal, your food prep time is greatly reduced allowing for you to enjoy the family not live in the kitchen.  Husbands, save your wife's back and legs this Thanksgiving and order Mrs. Knott's Turkey Feast today.  She will thank you for it.  Tell her you have this meal covered, drive over, bang some pots together and serve her a delicious meal.  She will thank you for it later.

One station was how much weight can an aluminum boat carry ( you made the boat). Another was a food coloring plus oil and water create a fun water decoration. It was free and the kids enjoyed learning about science in a fun way. They also had food trucks to feed your tummy. I recommended to get there early to find a parking spot.

Wreck It Ralph the movie.

Opening Friday, November 2nd is Disney next big hit movie Wreck-It Ralph!  Field Trip Mom was given an exclusive Pre-Screening at the world famous El Capitan Theater in Hollywood, CA. Field Trip Family went to Hollywood to get the scoop on Wreck It Ralph. Continue to read to find out more....

Disney and the El Capitan were excellent hosts to this pre-screening.  Our showing started at 10 AM so traffic to Hollywood was nice and easy.  Plenty of parking was located around the theater at this time for very reasonable prices.  We checked in with the staff out in front of the theater who gave us our media pack and tickets.  We entered the 86 year old theater and were greeted with history and nostalgia.  The theater is beautiful with every detail in old Hollywood affairs.  We were directed to our seats and allowed to capture the moment.  Decorated for Halloween, the theater had jack-o-lanterns and decor to celebrate the holiday.  As we took our seats, music began to play and a beautiful organ lifted from underneath the stage to play all of the Disney classic songs while seating continued.
Wreck-It Ralph is the story of Ralph an 80's 8 bit video game character who is the bad guy in the video game Fix It Felix Jr.  Felix is the games' hero and the main character of the video game who is everyones star.  After years of being the bad character, Ralph becomes tired and angry wanting nothing more than to prove he too can be a hero of all video gamers.  In an attempt to become a hero, Ralph hops games and discovers trouble in another game and fights to make it right before the game is placed out of order and is "Unplugged" for good.  The story has a great message showing how helping others is the key to happiness.

Full of memorable 80's arcade game characters from Q-Bert to Sonic to Mortal Kombat, the movie brought back fond memories of my days dropping quarters into games like Super Mario Bros., Asteroids and Punch Out.  Enjoyable for the kids as well as adults, this movies brings a little for everyone.  Check out the preview below and run to the theater this weekend to show your support for Wreck-It Ralph!
Field Trip Mom received free admission to this pre-screen in exchange for this blog.  We want to thank Disney and the El Capitan theater for including us in this opportunity!
