McDonald's Blueberry Oatmeal - New

Being a parent of two very active kids, I sometimes don't have time to make breakfast.
As a busy parent, I am always trying to find new ways to eat a great breakfast.  Okay, the truth is I get tired and I need a little help.  I go to McDonald's to grab a bite to eat.  Before you stop reading, you should know that we have been given a rare and very special tour of the McDonalds' Kitchen as well as the opportunity to interview an independent 3rd party nutritionist who has done extensive research on McDonalds'.  As with all food consumption, moderation is the key, regardless of whether you are eating at home, a 5 star restaurant or a "fast food' restaurant.

I am lovin' it!  The new McDonald's Blueberry Banana Oatmeal is a quick easy way to get good, healthy, quality food for a price that won't break the bank.  See the nutritional comparison below.  This data is just an estimate and with all things is hard to compare apples to apples as McDonald's does not disclose all of the ingredients that go into their oatmeal.  For comparison, we took the Oatmeal nutritional data from the Quaker Oats website and added the nutritional data for 2 oz of fresh blueberries.  Please note, most people add, butter, salt, and milk to their oatmeal during the cooking / pre-consumption process.  In addition, McDonald's oatmeal also has banana in it which our comparison does not include.  All and all, you can see by adding these items in, your homemade oatmeal would be very close in comparison to the McDonalds' version.

Honestly, we love to share a big breakfast.  My little guy eats one pancake and half of a sausage. I eat one muffin with jelly and the other half of the sausage. My older son eats the last piece of muffin with jelly, bacon and some egg.  We usually have eggs left over, however now that my oldest is eating a bit more, I am replacing my portion of the meal with an oatmeal.

Our tour of the kitchen was quite impressive.  The staff and nutritionist took us back to the refrigerator where by our surprise we were welcomed by a host of fresh eggs, mangos for the fresh fruit smoothies, and lettuce & tomatoes for their hamburgers.  The walk-in refrigerator was as cold as the arctic and packed full of great ingredients.  The kitchen was super clean...I can say that the McDonald's kitchen was cleaner than most home kitchens I have seen.  On behalf of Field Trip Mom, I want to Thank the people of McDonalds' for hosting this incredible tour and nutritional knowledge lesson.  If you have never tried McDonald's host of new menu items, drive on down, you will be glad you did!

I want to say "THANK YOU" to everyone involved in providing us with a great experience. Mr. Robert Nibeel, owner and operator, provided us with access to the Mcdonald's kitchen and great food. The staff, Adrian and Juan who walked us through the kitchen, were great hosts. Bonnie Modugno, MS, RD, nutritiontist who guided us through healthy choices and answered all of our questions. Alexis thank you for inviting us!!!!

Great idea to compare the two oatmeals; even though the McDonald's is higher in fat, it also is fortified with vitamins and other nutrients.

Like yourself, I too, am always on a time crunch for making my "own" oatmeal at home. This past weekend, I had the chance to try the Blueberry Banana Nut Oatmeal from McDonald's and I must say that it was far more superior than the Fruit and Maple Oatmeal I tried back in 2010.

For me, it tasted like a baked oatmeal, slightly creamy, with generous portions of blueberry. Although the flavoring of bananas was there, I wished they offer freshly cut bananas to create that "homemade" feeling.

The pleasure was all ours!
I met a guy once who used to work in McDonalds in high school and he said now whenever he has to use a restroom or eat fast food, that's where he always goes because he remembers the really high standards they had for cleanliness. (It's funny, when he started his story with "I used to work there..." I thought he was going to tell me he avoids the place but it was the opposite!)

How to make a California Mission Model.

Learn how to make a California Mission Model at home or in the classroom. We made this project as part of the California Public School Fourth grade requirement in a group setting. Continue to read on to get the supply list and instructions for a successful mission model. On an ordinary day, I was reminded how amazing kids really are when there are no limits. Just as equally amazing are the teachers who guide them and teach them everyday.  I am very thankful for the opportunity that I was given as a parent volunteer.  The day was like a beautiful dance where parents, teachers and students came together for a common goal. The goal was to make models of California Missions from a simple picture and lots of cardboard.  I can honestly say the goal was reached and everyone deserved an "A".

State Testing and a letter of encouragement

State Testing CCSS SBAC is starting next week for our area.  This semester, my son's fourth grade teacher has asked that I write him a letter of encouragement.  She gave us a few weeks notice. I have, in the past few days, written a few handwritten notes of encouragement. Then, I would wake up the next day realizing that it was not loving enough and second guessing myself. This task has been a little hard for me.  Then, the final email reminder came from the teacher. It read as follow: "This is just a friendly reminder to please send a letter of encouragement to your student to be opened this coming Monday, May 1. Students will be given the letters prior to taking their first test."  Oh my goodness, I have to get it done!!! So, I put on my big girl pants and re-wrote the letter for the 5th time. This time, I made it classroom friendly and left out lots of the I love you's and all the mushy stuff I had written before. The letter went something like this:  Dea
